Abstract

The statue of Saint João Marcos from Raposos, Minas Gerais, possibly from the eighteenth century, was stored in the parish house, displaced from its cult function and with the invocation known only by the name painted on its base. Apparently it’s the only sculpture dedicated to this saint in Minas Gerais who presents this iconography. This study has as its objective to elucidate about this representation, making an iconographic analysis following the model
proposed by Erwin Panofsky, discussing the references found about this saint in Portugal and Brazil, raising hypotheses about the origin and history of the sculpture of St. John Mark that we consider to be of great importance for its preservation and restoration of their religious context.
