Historical research and attribution of autorship to Aleijadinho

Abstract

This article aims to presente a synthesis of the research that led to the identification of an unedited sacred image of Mártir São Manoel, in Rio Pomba – MG, as possible work by Antônio Francisco Lisboa – o Aleijadinho. The attribution was made during a conservation and restoration process that led to the improvement of the instruments for the protection of the cultural asset. Starting from the bibliographic revision of Antônio Francisco Lisboa and his relations with Rio Pomba and supported by existing primary documentation that proves the relationship established between father Manoel de Jesus Maria, founding pastor of Rio Pomba, and the sculptor, the study reports the process of historical research, conciliated with the cientific analyzes developed during the processo of the conservation image that support the attribution.
