Abstract

The religious sculpture production of Minas Gerais in the 18th and 19th centuries brings together a significant contingent of anonymous sculptors of high aesthetic quality. These sculptors - working mainly in sculptures featuring saints and
other religious figures - break with the shared dogmas of the fine arts, with the canons of sculpture erudition, establishing an original and unusually poetic universe.

José Alberto Nemer, Universidade Federal de Minas Garais / UFMG

José Alberto Nemer é artista plástico e doutor em Artes Plásticas pela Universidade de Paris. Lecionou em universidades brasileiras e estrangeiras, como a Universidade Federal de Minas Garais / UFMG e a Université de Paris III / Sorbonne. Entre seus livros publicados destacam-se Eu me desenho: o artista diante da criação individual e coletiva (Mazza Edições, 1991), A Mão Devota: santeiros populares das Minas Gerais nos séculos 18 e 19 (Editora Bem-Te-Vi, 2008) e Almanaque Insólito: visões inusitadas no cotidiano brasileiro (WMF Martins Fontes, 2019).
