was based on trust. A legal and official means of recognizing the quality of precious metals through
contrasting marks and punishing offenders has never been created. This illegality contributed to the
fact that the artifacts produced in the past centuries do not have reliable information about the
producing factories, periods in which they were produced or the contents of the alloys. These marks
help researchers to date the object and the lack of this important information affects the diagnoses
prepared by conservators. This work aims to suggest an identification by temporal affinity between
the styles of the reliefs found in the carvings of the Minas Gerais altarpieces and the decorative
elements of a silver collection. As societies have always been influenced by the styles of their time,
aesthetic equivalence has the potential to indicate approximately the period from which the metallic
artifacts produced in Minas Gerais State may have been made
