REVIEWING THE SCULPTURAL PRODUCTION OF FRANCISCO VIEIRA SERVAS

Abstract

Since 2002, when the book Francisco Vieira Servas e o Ofício da Escultura na Capitania das
Minas do Ouro was published, several works were discovered that were sculpted by Servas
which in a new edition, they will replace some of the images presented in that publication. At
the time, for the exhibition of the group of imagery attributed to him, it was based on some
comparative references which, as the years went by and new studies were developed, it was
realized that they were works from other schools, in similar forms to those attributed to Servas,
but not produced in his workshop. In the present article, besides showing some of these newlydiscovered
images, we intend to make considerations about the authorship and the craft of
religious sculpture in that period of the then Capitania de Minas.
