THE GOOD LORD JESUS OF PIRAPORA:
300 YEARS OF ART AND DEVOTION ON THE BANKS OF THE TIETÊ
Keywords:
Good Lord Jesus of Pirapora, Iconography, Baroque, Popular DevotionAbstract
The devotion to the Good Lord Jesus of Pirapora began in 1725, 300 years ago, with the discovery of an image of Ecce Homo on the banks of the Tietê River, the current municipality of Pirapora do Bom Jesus. The historic sanctuary that houses the image of Good Jesus is a pilgrimage center for thousands of pilgrims, especially during patronal festivals, a legitimate intangible heritage of São Paulo, full of traditional manifestations of piety and popular culture. The baroque image of the Good Lord Jesus is a sculptural example that represents the transition from the 17th to the 18th century. Thus, we seek to understand the identity elements of Ecce Homo based on an iconographic-iconological analysis, considering the ideals of the Counter-Reformation and the various artistic manifestations related to the Passion of Christ, especially from the medieval period and which reached their peak in the Baroque.
