Abstract

This article deals with the representation of the Divine Holy Spirit, a component of the Holy Trinity, which appears inside and outside chapels, churches, parishes and collections in Minas Gerais. In most of the buildings and collections visited and analyzed, the sculpture of the Divine appears in the main altarpiece, in the crowning or central strip, flanked by God the Father and God the Son. There is an altarpiece in which the Holy Trinity appears crowning Our Lady. It can still be found in pulpits, painted on ceilings, whether in the chancel, nave, sacristy or baptistry, and also on countless liturgical objects. The most renowned artisans from Minas Gerais executed their Divines and many other anonymous artisans as well. The circulating printed images in the 18th and 19th centuries were the main inspirational sources for the execution of the Divines, but as presented, each one has its own distinct sculptural and polychromatic resolution.
