This article analyzes the restoration of a sculpture of Saint Anthony that suffered significant damage due to a fire. The restoration is presented as a process that must involve all stakeholders, as decisions regarding interventions affect the artwork's ability to convey its symbolic meaning. Contemporary restoration theory suggests that the goal is to return the piece to a state that enhances its communicative capacity, considering the perception of devotees and the historical context of the object. The restoration proposal considers the sculpture’s constructive technique, which is a fully carved polychrome wooden figure, emphasizing the need to preserve its original characteristics to reestablish the devotional relationship. The results demonstrate the possibility of preserving the symbolic and aesthetic value of the artwork, despite the extensive damage caused by carbonization.
