This article presents research results on the figure of Saint Veronica, frequently referred to as Veronica, initiated by the analysis of a sculpture in a tomb at the Bonfim Cemetery in Belo Horizonte. The central piece in the tomb, flanked by two children, was studied iconographically and historically. Despite the searches, no information was found about the deceased or the family and their relationship with the image. Other sculptures in Minas Gerais were researched, finding only one in the Basilica of Bom Jesus do Matosinhos, Congonhas. Iconographic studies revealed that Veronica is considered a legendary figure, without proof of historical existence, which led the Vatican to order the removal of her image from churches. However, her representation remains in Christian tradition, in the Stations of the Cross and Holy Week in Brazil and other countries. In the Brazilian context, the "Song of Veronica," one of the most moving and widely represented scenes in the Stations of the Cross, is consolidated as a central element in popular devotion.
