This article aims to discuss conservation-restoration intervention criteria for three-dimensional objects, in light of material and immaterial values assimilated in their historical path. The study is based on a devotional sculpture representing São João Marcos, dated from the first half of the 18th century, originating from the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in the city of Raposos, Minas Gerais. The analysis of the polychromy of this sculpture confirmed the hypothesis that the work underwent three historical moments of technical execution: polychromy, repolychromy and repainting. In these strata it was possible to establish differences regarding the technical quality and the particularities of each phase. In light of the material aspects, we propose interventions in the sculpture maintaining different times of polychromy, aiming to preserve immaterial values – patrimonial, religious, historical, artistic, museum – present in the material of the work, without eliminating aspects added over time.
