texto do artista Kaprow retirado do livro.

Large-scale artists’ book of photographs and texts documenting the happening by Kaprow. “Rates of Exchange was carried out by a small number of couples in New York City, march 22nd and 23rd, 1975, under the sponsorship of the Stefanotty Gallery. The participants’ own homes, environs and times were used. An initial meeting was held to discuss practicalities and a review of the event followed afterward. Such preparations and reflections are part of the signification process of the whole. As usual there was no audience.” — from Kaprow’s postscript within the book.

Artist’s book by Allan Kaprow documenting his happening Satisfaction, which took place in April 1976. Book comprised of images and texts by Kaprow that outline the happening. “Ordinarily, we want and manage to get a certain amount of attention from the world all of our lives. The kind, manner and quantity may change, but in any case it’s attention. It follows that others want attention from us. A sort of acknowledgement-economics is involved, a trade-off, usually with a profit motive. We would like (unconsciously of course) to get more that we give…”

Four actors–two male, two female–perform short scripts by Kaprow in which they must seek, give, or deny attention to one another. Carried out by four groups of four in 1976 in New York, this book documents one group’s performance of Satisfaction with black and white photographs and reproductions of the scripts. In a short essay at the back, Kaprow discusses the range of complex social and emotional interactions this deceptively simple exercise can (and is meant to) bring out in its participants.

Long out-of-print since its first edition in 1970, Robert Filliou’s ‘work in continuous progress’ remains an essential primer to the artist’s still radical ideas on participatory art making and teaching. Along with extensive writing by Filliou, the book includes interviews with numerous artists close to him, such as Joseph Beuys, George Brecht, John Cage, Dorothy Iannone, Allan Kaprow and Diter Rot. This edition is an exact facsimile of the original, in order to preserve its highly inventive bilingual (English/German) layout and idiosyncratic composition.
