Reality

Reality, (1972) 3rd Printing 2014.
Matt’s Gallery / X Marks the Bökship

“REALITY “ is based on Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason. It is a precise copy of the third subchapter of The Transcendental Power of Pure Judgement (Analysis of Principles) from Doctrine of Elements (part II, section 1). “REALITY” means reality.

. , : ; – ( ) / / ” “ ! ? … – or punctuation – is something which escapes conformation with metalinguistic reality and which does not constitute either its representation nor its description (in written language).

Although we commonly refer to punctuation marks, these notations have no meaning external to themselves. They do not have any models in meatalinguistic reality and themselves do not model any elements of that reality. They have no designates, while, simultaneously, not being void, they are therefore neutral vis-à-vis metalinguistic reality.

. , : ; – ( ) / / ” “ ! ? … create reality which is e q u i v a l e n t   to metalinguistic reality. In a sense they are the only “REALITY” reality of ‘Jarosław Kozłowski ‘.

In 1972, Ulises Carrión produced his first artist’s book “SONNET(S)” which consists of a 44 variations of a sonnet by Dante Gabriel Rosetti titled “Heart’s Compass”. Using the language like a material, Carrión writes Rossetti’s poem over and over again on a typewriter, in slightly different versions. This book today is considered Carrión’s first “artists book”, where he still uses language, but quite differently.

In 2009 Michalis Pichler, in a similar approach but using a computer, probably word or open office, created 44 new variations and published a book titled “SOME MORE SONNET(S)”. (via http://www.buypichler.com/sonnets-other-sonnets-0)

« In 2001, we decided to publish the complete text of The New Five Foot Shelf in one single volume, in softcover, to make it affordable for most people. We gathered the manual of the 1910’s The Five Foot Shelf Of Books and the five chapters together. With kind support of the International Centre of Graphic Arts of Ljubljana, we published in June 2003 The New Five Foot Shelf of Books, presented during the Ljubljana Biennale. The New Five Foot Shelf of Books includes a great deal of biographical references, such as Duchamp’s or Broodthaers’, that we find in the The Three Marcels chapter.
Those references do not belong to public property yet. In the chapter entitled Once upon a time when books were famous, Allen Ruppersberg also uses a lot of authors’ quotes. It became quickly obvious that the commercialization of this book would be impossible without paying rights of mentioned authors. So we decided to publish this book NOT FOR SALE, getting round the law, making the book « out-law », « offside »… and establishing new rules… »
Michèle Didier
